Case Studies In Change:
Australia
Situation: Australian downstream operation of Oil and
Gas major had become loss-making resulting in extreme
pressure to deliver a turnaround in difficult competitive
and regulatory conditions.
Programmes: Team development work with management
team, inaugural leadership meeting for top 80 executives, a
series of personal leadership workshops and two programmes
to deliver results.
Results: First change programme ran with 36 projects,
involved 250 people and delivered increased net income after
tax of A$57m (half company’s full year results). After one
year of change programmes, company returned to full
profitability.
South Africa
Situation: South African operation of Oil and Gas
major had become loss-making resulting in extreme pressure
to deliver a turnaround. Problems exacerbated by delayed
implementation of JD Edwards system.
Programme: First change programme for results
involved more than 20 projects, sale of second programme.
Results: 100 people involved in delivering
significant bottom line results (5% increase on return on
investment, US$5m increase in net income after tax, US$35m
reduction in capital employed, JD Edwards system working)
and behaviour change (400 leaders – 25% of workforce -
developed, team working embedded.
North, West and East
Africa
Situation: North, West and East African marketing
operations of Oil and Gas major had severe problems with
trade debtors outstanding; different causes for late
payments in each country operation.
Programme: Action learning programmes focused on
breaking down cross-functional barriers, using open
communications and team working focused on trade debtor
reduction.
Results: More than 300 staff involved, delivery of
significant reduction in trade debtors (over US$20m
reduction by end of 90 days) across 20 African
companies.
